RARE and Collectible! Vintage Jaeger LeCoultre "dirty dozen" WWII
[Triple Signed: Broad Arrow-KNIL-A.D.R.I] Ca. 1945
"W.W.W.": Engraved on the caseback, standing for "Watch, Wrist, Waterproof".
Broad Arrow Emblem: The Broad Arrow or Pheon, a symbol of British Crown property, appears on the dial, inner case, and caseback with Civil Serial Number (on the inner case).
Interesting formerly issued British W.W.W. used by Dutch forces in Indonesia late in 1945 and then issued to the Indonesian Army! The first marking "KNIL" stands for (K)oninklijk (N)ederland (I)ndisch (L)eger, the detachment of the Dutch Army assigned maintain order during colonialism in Imdonesia. The KNIL marking was then scratched out as the watch issued to A.D.R.I that stands for Army of the Republic of Indonesia. This watch maintains its original flat chrome finish.
During World War II, the British Ministry of Defense set its own standards for wristwatches with functions specifically needed on the battlefield, and 12 Swiss manufacturers produced watches with these specifications. They went on to become known as the Dirty Dozen, after the war movie produced in 1967. This watch is one of them, made by Jaeger-LeCoultre. On the back of the watch, there is a broad arrow indicating that it was owned by the British government at that time, a www indicating its performance (wrist wrist, watch watch, waterproof and water resistant), and an "f" engraved by the Ministry of Defense, which is a simple engraving, but when you know its meaning, you feel the weight of history.
